… gathering and discussing misconducts!
Though the website is not very lively these months, we are still doing our best to make the project sustainable!
Since last summer, we have presented our initiative to the tenth conference of the European Association of Science Editors. This conference, held in late September 2009 in Pisa, adressed the issue of "Misconduct in Science Communication" and gave us the opportunity to write an essay in European Science Editing journal.
Following our presentation in Madrid at the European Science Foundation conference in 2008, Scientific Red Cards joined the working group entitled "Raising awareness and sharing information". Consequently, one of us attended in November 2009 the joined workshop of ESF and ORI on "Responsible Conduct of Research: Good Research Practices and Research Integrity Training" in Strasbourg.
These two events offered us to interact with very different members of the community (editors and policy makers) and helped to sharpen our position in this context: as we believe that guidelines and code of conducts are required but not sufficient to face misconduct, we aim at developing our website as a proof of principle of a possible action.
In the meantime, we gave a lecture about misconduct in the Biosciences Master of Ecole Normale Superieure de Lyon. We are also working hard to get a formal agreement from the french Commission Nationale de l'Informatique et des Libertés (organization about informatics and freedom). As the project is the first of its kind, we are facing many questions but we hope to receive a definitive answer soon.
